The Household & Couple Budget

Two incomes, shared costs, and a split that ends the argument.

Put in what each of you earns and what you share. The tool works out a fair share, tracks who actually paid, and tells you the one payment that squares you up.

Why we made it

Splitting everything down the middle is not always fair.

When one of you earns more, an even split quietly takes a much bigger bite out of the smaller income. When one pays the rent and the other pays everything else, nobody can remember who is ahead.

This tool does the arithmetic so neither of you has to keep score in your head. It shows what each person should pay, what each person did pay, and the single transfer that makes it even.

Inside the tool

Fair, and checkable

The shares always add up to the total, down to the last cent. No rounding disappears.

Settle up

One payment, worked out from what each of you has paid against your share. Mark it done and the board clears. Every settlement is kept, so there is a record rather than a memory.

Shared costs

Rent, power, the food shop, the yearly insurance. Say who pays each one and how often. Yearly costs are turned into a monthly figure so everything can be compared.

Honestly

Who it is for, and who it is not

Made for you if:

  • You share money with a partner, a flatmate or family
  • One of you earns more and you want a split that reflects it
  • You are tired of working out who owes who
  • You would rather keep your numbers off a company server

Give it a miss if:

  • You keep money completely separate and want no shared view
  • You need it to split a restaurant bill between ten friends
  • You want it to move money between accounts, which it cannot do

Your data

It never leaves your device

There is no account, no login and no server. Everything you type is kept by your own browser, on the machine you typed it on. We cannot see it, because it never reaches us.

Save a backup file whenever you like and load it on another device or after a reinstall. That file is plain readable text, so you are never locked in.

Questions

Frequently asked

How is the fair share worked out?

By income, each person pays the same percentage of what they earn. The shares are worked out in cents and the remainder goes to one person, so they always add up to the exact total.

Can we use it for more than two people?

Yes, up to six. It works the same for flatmates or a family as it does for a couple.

Does it handle two currencies?

One household uses one currency, on purpose. Splitting across currencies would need an exchange rate, and a made up rate turns a fair split into a guess. If you genuinely run two currencies, keep a second copy of the file.

Does it track personal spending too?

No, and that is deliberate. This tool is only about what you share. Personal spending belongs in The Money Tracker.

Is it really one payment?

Yes. $16.99 once, the file is yours, and updates to this tool are free.
